Below is an excerpt from Daryl White's Ph'D Dissertation :
"... the myth functions sociologically in a fundamentally conservative way to reinforce and strengthen society's structurally weak but necessary social relationships . Ideology does not just reflect and reinforce social formations in a general way ; its role is a much more precise one . Ideology serves to maintain social relationships by concentrating on contradictions and structural weaknesses . More specifically, in societies where contradictions are basically antagonistic, myths are often used to obscure the objective social conditions by falsely locating the problem outside of society---or outside the antagonistic relationships--- and within the nature of things and people . That is, contradictions are resolved in the mythical narrative which cannot be resolved in objective social reality without transforming the society itself---an alternative the myth is designed to negate ... Such myths serve to keep the society and its members from recognizing the societal nature of its problems."
