We know that trump is "thin-skinned", meaning, he takes what is said about him personally . My generation was taught to ignore worded insults, that is, we grew up with this "old adage" = "Sticks and stones may break my bones but WORDS will NEVER hurt me " . Obviously trump was NOT brought up with that, and we are living the consequences of that shortcoming .
A kwik* Search recovers that this "old adage" has been around since 1862 and was first expressed in the "Christian Recorder" a publication out of "The African Methodist Episcopal Church" . It was communicated to children to supply them with a Defense Mechanism that could be utilized to thwart verbal bullying . I believe that "IT" WAS effective, but that in Modern Times "IT" has all but evaporated and nothing was put into Public Consciousness to replace it . Look at what has resulted .
I cite this Instance to make my Case for the Study of Children's Literature, which I contend is a Study in the [Oral] Transmissions of Human Morality, Social Mores and Ethical Practices .
